In terms of nerve-racking meetings with an unknown conclusion, a first date or job interview are not a million miles away from each other. Instead of a CV, you’re writing an online dating profile, and if a potential partner likes you, they may well call you to interview. But what steps should you take to make sure you get a second interview?
Dress to Impress
When you’re looking for a new career, the last thing you want to do is turn up to the interview in a pair of tracksuit bottoms and an old, baggy jumper. The same goes for a date. First impressions are everything, and if you’re not in your best garb, you’re not going to get the job. Obviously the dress code will depend on the formality of the venue (you’ll probably dress differently for bowling than for The Ritz), but as long as you look smart you should be fine.
Do Your Research
One advantage online dating has is that you can do a little bit of preparation prior to your date. You can look at their Luv Traffic profile and see what they are interested in, and you’ll already have some good subjects to discuss. But this doesn’t mean you should pretend to like things that they do. This may work in the short term, but you’ll be rumbled eventually when they find out you’re not as keen on monster trucks as you initially made out. Honesty is always the best policy–whether it’s your previous work experience or your hobbies and interests.
When It Comes to Conversation Topics, Use a Bit of Tact
When a potential employer asks you why you left your last job, that is not an invitation to start talking about how much you hated your boss or how boring the work was. Similarly, the last thing your new date wants to hear about is your ex! Keep the conversation light; be honest as we’ve said earlier, but some subjects are better left for further down the line.
Remember That There Might Be Several Other Candidates for the Job
Unfortunately, the honest truth with a job opening or a relationship opening is that there is often plenty of competition. In the early stages of online dating, people are testing the waters to see who they like, so there’s always the chance that you won’t be the one they pick even if you hit if off. But chin up because…
You Should Be Confident and Think Positively
A positive outlook is key. Not only will it make you look happier and more attractive to your partner, but it’s important to look on the bright side when you might be going on quite a few dates in the coming weeks. If you don’t get on in the right way or there’s no spark, it’s just that this particular pairing wasn’t the right one–you will get there!
But There Is One Important Difference between an Interview and a Date
Online dating is a two way street, so don’t spend the whole evening talking about yourself! Ask plenty of questions and it will flow naturally on its own steam. Good luck!
